Although the finished product is almost always worth the time and effort put into a remodel, there are some obstacles that arise when renovating your home. What are the biggest renovation issues and how should you handle them? Let's discuss four major concerns:
-
Price: The ability to afford a project is one of the top concerns for remodeling/renovation. The best approach to take is to determine what you can afford to spend and find a contractor who will respect and stick by your budget. They will be able to tell you what features or materials you can choose within your budget. You can also save a lot of cash if you are smart about the details of your renovation. For example, where you buy your materials can make a huge difference. Finding a factory-direct retailer, who can cut out the costs of going through a middle-man can bring the cost down hundreds of dollars.
-
Time: The fact is, it takes time to do a remodel. There are a lot of moving parts and peices that each take a certain length of time to accomplish. To avoid frustration, you can be prepared for exactly how long this project is going to take. Talk to your contractor about this before the beginning of the project. If you have an event or holiday you want your project done for, plan this out with your contractor and project manager. Remember, there some things they will have no control over, but in most scenerios, effective planning will alleviate these frustrations.
-
Mess: Many people are worried about the mess persuing a project will create (dust, trash, extra materials). Professional project manager should clean up after themselves. If you get someone who does not don't be afraid to voice your concerns. Contractors are working to satisfy their clients. Make sure they know if items aren't being picked up.
-
Pets: Like people, pets have a range different personalities, meaning a range of different reactions to situations. During remodeling time, some pets tend to get stressed or irritated with the arrival of new people in the house. To alleviate this anxiety, create a "safe-place," a room or area, where your pet can go when work is being done. You can also try to give your pet a break from the chaos by taking them to a dog park or on a walk. The extra attention may make a significant difference. (Realestate.com)
